Reaching for Heaven
Reaching for Heaven is a sanctuary sought out by outsider art enthusiasts, the Atlas Obscura curious and earth art pilgrims. Because it is intended as a pilgrimage site suitable for quiet contemplation, siting of the art is critical to the visual impact of the installation and its ultimate success.
Ideally Reaching for Heaven will reside off a county or state highway or in sculpture park so that it will be unnecessary to drive through other developed properties for access.
Because the central tower is 36 feet tall siting will be important so as to not impinge on neighbors' viewsheds. Similarly, it will be important that there are few nearby developments so that visitors to the site have unlimited visual access to the horizon.
The base is 48 feet in diameter. In addition, access paths and parking will need to be accomodated. If land could be obtained with adjacent open space or public lands the installation could be accomodated on as little as an acre. However, ideally 40 acres or preferably as much as a full section of land (640 acres) would be aquired.
Currently, the artist is actively pursuing and reseaching land opporunities in the Santa Fe, Abiquiu and Taos areas of New Mexico. The strong support of the arts in these communities and the artist's association with Santa Fe over many years is a primary factor in seeking land in these areas.
It is also possible that an appropriate site might be found in a sculpture garden or other public art setting that welcomes outsider art if the criteria for quiet contemplation and the artisitic integrity of the installation can be met.
